My name is Julia, and as part of my freshman seminar course, I am completing this blog about the scientist Mimi Koehl. I chose Dr. Koehl because biomechanics is interesting to me and will most likely be my major, and I wanted to know more about one of the more prominent scientists in this field.

This blog is dedicated to biomechanic and professor Dr. Mimi A. R. Koehl, who has made important strides in the scientific community. The information posted will deal with her early life, education, career, and accomplishments, as well as her suitability as a role model for women in science. This blog is being used to satisfy the requirements for the University of Mary Washington’s Beauty and Brains: Women in Science freshman seminar course.

Before you get started, you should understand what the field of biomechanics is and how it affects you:

  • Biomechanics is the study of structure and movement in nature, such as feeding, reproduction, and locomotion. Mimi Koehl has studied how organisms that live on coastlines withstand the forces of incoming tides, as well as how free-floating plankton move and survive while completely surrounded by water.
  • There are many different types of biomechanics, including plant biomechanics (how plants live and grow), sport biomechanics (how athletes move and how to make them better), biofluid mechanics (the structure and function of various bodily fluids, like blood for instance), and biotribology (how friction and lubrication affect various systems and joints).
  • The findings produced by biomechanics like Mimi Koehl are used in a wide variety of places. For example, understanding how humans move can help medical professionals design better joint replacements, and learning more about how cells work together can help scientists further their knowledge on creating new cell tissues for those in need.
